I’ve always had a thing for old race cars. In particular old race car livery, as my Forza Motorsport 4 store front can attest to. I spent hours recreating old classic liveries in the game and loved to apply them to the descendants of old models.
Old liveries are art. Just imagine if Andy Warhol was a grease monkey. They are the petrol heads pop art. So naturally when I was sent a link to this site of old Formula one Livery on new cars it caught my attention.
Of course the idea of classic livery isn’t abandoned in modern F1 with Ferrari keeping a version of the famous red and white arrow livery from the Marlboro sponsorship days and Lotus F1 taking on the Gold on Black colour scheme made famous in the Lotus 77.
There is even mention of a return to the white and red livery for McLaren in 2015 when they pair up with Honda as an engine supplier, giving a nod to the McLaren MP4/5 immortalised by the Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna era.
But imagine a world where sponsorship rules didn’t change and the cars we grew up watching as kids still had the same recognisable artwork. When a racing Green car with a mustard yellow stipe was enough to know exactly who was flying over the crest at the Nurburgring.
