When Mercedes-Benz say they have a new or undated range to unveil, that include an AMG line, many of use hold our breaths, as it can be very hit or miss. Thankfully, perhaps due to whatever they are putting in the water in the design office, the last few models they have been knocking have been stunning machines, and the CLS range is another home run. Even more so for the AMG models available. The first generation, W219 models ages very quickly, whether it be due to the change in the automotive worlds design direction or just being a little too old fashioned / the old man Mercs of days gone by.
The new CLS AMG range is anything but dull, packing a 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine that pumps out 410 kW (557 hp) with 702NM on the CLS 63 AMG models and 430 kW (585 hp) with 800NM on the CLS 63 S AMG models. This face stretching torque should easily propel the CLS AMG from 0-100 in the low 4 seconds, similar to Audi’s RS6. Considering the size and power of these motors Mercedes have still managed to make them somewhat efficient, with 10.4 and 10.6 Litres per 100km for both models.
The entire CLS range also come equipped with the latest 9G-Tronic, the worlds first 9-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter these nine forward gears the 9G‑TRONIC manages to reduce fuel consumption, while further enhancing shift comfort and agility. Another first addition for is the introduction of MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which provide anti-dazzle continuous main beam that light up the road surface and its edges without blinding oncoming traffic.
The interior has also seen a dramatic upgrade, taking aspects from the recently unveiled S class. The new 8 inch free-standing Command display is more integrated then previous models, some feeling like after thoughts. Other new features include a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel , and central control panel. The CLS range will be available with five interior colours, six trim finishes and a range of leather options, in addition to a host of potential individualisation options.
