Matt Watson’s Ultimate Fishing Toyota Hilux SR5

Enjoy some serious fishing with a spot of off roading while looking the part!? Then Toyotas new custom Ultimate Fishing Utility might be for you.

Designed with the help of Matt Watson from the ITM Fishing show, they took a stock SR5 Hilux and transformed it into a “New Zealand proven” all terrain monster. “There were a bunch of Toyota accessories I had to have, plus a few custom mods we thought would be cool on the back of the ute. I thought the build team was joking with a few of the more ‘out there’ ideas, so I was pretty surprised to see the Hilux roll in with a pneumatic bait caster in the tray!”

So what does this ultimate utility have exactly? Stainless steel “side pipes”, allow bull bars front and rear with Hella spotties all mounted atop of 20″ Black Fuel Trophy alloys with Nitto Terra Grappler ATs. The entire ute has been wrapped in a matte Lagoon Blue with carbon fibre wrap black accents on the bonnet, roof, sides, door handles and tailgate to really stand out from the crowd. “It looks cool, has the off-road chops and all the gadgets for a great day’s fishing. It’s just the perfect all-round man truck and a great way to show what’s possible with a Hilux.”

Other fishing gadgets strapped on were Seahorse Kontiki with torpedo, winch and traceboard. Railblaza rod holders and fittings frame the tray, Hi-Tech Plastics bait board and Icey-Tek chilli bin make it easy to bait both the kontiki and rods right out of the back of the truck, while the custom-made hydraulic bait caster launches baited lines direct from the truck up to 280 metres into the surf. “There are not too many Hilux’s out there with that many accessories on it and with such a broad range at that. It was a good test of our ability to pull together a pretty complex concept and turn it into reality.”

Filthy tidiness is probably how I would describe my passion for anything with a motor. I enjoy the perfection, purposefulness, and thought put into the design and assembly of cars....but I do love to see them been thrashed and covered in brake dust, dirt and blood. You gotta use it to love it in my books.
