We are the social media generation. Everything we do, whether important or not, ends up on social media. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow us to share things such as throwing ice cold buckets of water over your head with people all over the world. Even if they don’t want to see it! Isn’t that great?

As a sign of times Mazda are set to unveil their new fourth-generation MX-5 via video stream on their Facebook page. Yes, a car every single petrosexual in the world has been eagerly anticipating will make it’s debut not at some pompous motor show but via Facebook. But that’s not all. No, Mazda could’ve left it at that but someone had the bright idea of making it a concert too. So there’ll be musical guests. At least Mazda are trying to appeal to the youth market…

Regardless of how it’s being launch, a new MX-5 is always exciting. This new one promises to stay true to the original template of being a compact, front engine, rear-wheel drive, two seater convertible with 50-50 weight distribution. From this teaser photo we can see the new MX-5 has similar proportions to the current car with a long bonnet and flared wheel arches.

Of course it will weigh less than the outgoing car by around 100kgs according to Mazda. Powering the MX-5 will be new SkyActiv engines though their specifications are yet to be revealed. Rumours suggest, or hope, there’ll be a choice of either 1.5 and a 2.0-litre engines though it’s not sure if either or both will have turbocharging.

2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the MX-5 and since the launch of the NA, almost a million MX-5s have been sold making it the most successful sports car of all time. There were also rumours of an Italian twin to the MX-5 which was originally going to be badged as an Alfa but is now unclear whether that will go ahead. Its twin could now be badged as a Fiat or an Abarth. The new MX-5 reveal will be on September 3.
