New Zealand’s Great Driving Roads – The Forgotten World Highway

A couple of years ago I happened to have a weekend to myself and decided to do a little exploring. This was the highlight of the route I took on the second day of my trip.

The falling rocks signs in NZ are not kidding. Lots of this sort of thing

Single lane bridges

And 20km of pretty rough gravel – boneshaking on the cheap coilovers I had fitted at the time. I’m told this surface can vary significantly as they smooth it regularly, then the rain makes it rough again.

The very narrow one lane tunnel is one of the highlights of this route!

Whangamomona is a good place for a quick coffee and toastie before some more driving.

The 35km after Whangamomona was just awesome. I was driving as fast as I wanted to, having a great time and only occasionally hitting the 100km/h speed limit.

Sweeping curves, “saddles” (i.e. over a biig hill in short distance with 15k and 25k limit tight bends and big drops at the side of the road. No barriers obviously), up and down bits. Really great driving.

This is another of NZ’s great driving roads, I highly recommend you get out there and try it!
