The return of “Race to the Sky” was the only motivation Cox Motorsport needed to purchase Andrew Hawkeswood’s purpose built hillclimb race car. The team agreed that this car was the perfect choice to give 23 year old Sloan Cox the best chance of victory on his first appearance at the prestigious event. Cox has always wanted to compete in this event and the team are gearing up with excitement to see Cox attack the hill.
It was agreed when the hillclimb car was purchased that after Leadfoot Festival the beast would be converted back to gravel, following a few modifications and some driver comfort upgrades. Following great success at Leadfoot, Cox Motorsport commenced making said changes in preparation for Race to the Sky.
With the hillclimb car being extremely different to the Mitsubishi Evo X rally car, the priority has been ensuring the team thoroughly learnt the car. Recent testing revealed areas of the car that needed improvement and with a few mechanicals and some new parts, the car is now finally ready for Race to the Sky.
“The biggest hurdle in feeling comfortable in this new hillclimb race car is getting my head around driving a car which is lighter and more powerful than what I am use to. After a few test days I am feeling great in the car. It really is a weapon to drive,” states Cox.
The Cox Motorsport team are geared up and eagerly anticipating Race to the Sky which takes place this weekend 18th-19th April in Cardrona Valley. Tickets to the event can be purchased online from www.racetothesky.co.nz.
