Project Rusty – Rob’s Audi UR-Quattro – Part 2 – Rusty is here!

Do you know what’s better than getting car parts delivered? Nothing? Normally I’d agree, but this week my new old car was delivered, and that was even better!

After a false start where the vehicle mover turned up for the car without calling first, Rusty was collected this Tuesday morning. I started clearing out my garage at the weekend, and it suddenly dawned on me how much stuff I had put to one side for later, filling most of the available storage space! So I booked a couple of days off work to finish the job, finally getting it all sorted out and taking a very full trailer to the tip on Wednesday morning.

The vehicle movers told me 3-4 working days to get the car down to me, so I wasn’t too optimistic so I called them and asked for an ETA. The Wellington depot manager said “The black Quattro? I’m looking at it now, it’ll be with you in a couple of hours.” Result.

I sat down, had a cuppa and tried not to keep glancing out of the window every two minutes. I was like a kid staying up watching for Santa. After an interminably long two hours and 20 minutes the transporter arrived, and there she was!

The transport guy was really enthusiastic about my car as he had owned one once years ago. I’m getting this from a lot of people, it’s certainly an iconic car!

My car was slowly and carefully reversed off the transporter, making a weird whistling noise from the engine and sounding a bit like Chewbacca when steering, but it was finally on my drive!

I gave it a quick introduction to its granddaughter, then reversed it into my garage, unable to wipe the silly grin off my face.

After a while I plucked up the courage to pull off the duct tape that was covering the worst of the rust. Well…

So there is is, after years of wanting one I finally have an Audi Quattro in my garage. I’m still grinning.

I’ve just started going over the car and I’ve discovered it has a couple of aftermarket options such as this fetching boot stay:

And this small portable swimming pool:

My next job is to start stripping the car and see what else I find and how bad the rust really is.
