The monthly meet for the Morning Cruise at the Daikanyama T-Site happens rain or shine. It was just unfortunate that the theme for last month’s meet was convertibles and that it’s currently the rainy season. Nevertheless a bit of moisture didn’t keep most people away.

Actually, I should probably say the theme was convertibles and pop-up lights. But in my mind the two should go hand in hand anyway. The typical MX-5s, Lotus Elans/Esprits, and pretty much every 90s Japanese sports car was there. You name it, it was there. RX-7 Savannah, 240SX, NSX, AE86 Trueno… They were all there. However some rarities weathered the rain. The pair of Porsche 914s were a particularly nice, especially the one with the Gulf livery.

Some oddballs included the Ginetta G4, the Rocket by the Light Car Company, and a Lada. There was even a Onevia, a 180SX up front and a S13 Silva at the back. It was no surprise to see many MX5s, though most were the original NA generation. The new ND was also present and even got the cute eyelash treatment. Another new Japanese sports car, the S660 arrived later.

More exotic cars included many Ferraris. There were not one but two Testarossas, a 308 GTB, a 328 GTB, a 348 Spider, a 360 Modena, and a 456GT. As well as the 914s, there was also a 928 and a new 911 GT3 which itself drew some attention. But I think the undisputed start of the meet was the Toyota 2000GT. Words can’t describe the magic and awe it exudes.

The pearlescent TVR Tuscan did give the 2000GT a good run for its money in terms of grabbing attention. The bright and unique paint, the wild looks, and the unashamedly old-school engine was a welcome change from the endless hybrids and vans littered on Japanese roads.

Right at the very end, just as most people had left a black 458 Italia creeped into the car park. But this was no ordinary 458 as it had the very wide and very cool Liberty Walks bodykit. No it’s neither a convertible nor does it have pop-up lights but when it’s a LB Works car, you don’t question the reasoning.

As I’ve said before, these meets happen on every second Sunday of the month though sometimes they have special events hosted by manufacturers at the end of the month. Stay tuned for more from these Morning Cruise events, tomorrow’s theme is pre-1995 Lancia. That should be fun.
