Last weekend was the annual Port Road street drag race event. I’ve seen many a YouTube drag racing video but never experienced it live, so I took my five year-old along to see what it was like.

We couldn’t stay for the whole 10am to 5pm event, but we were there for a few hours. It’s definitely something that petrolheads would enjoy, for the noise if nothing else. Those off-beat idling highly tuned V8s rumbling away, the noise and smell of the pre-run burnouts, then when the run started, the roar of the engines that’s so loud you can feel it in your chest. Awesome stuff.

There was an impressive selection of cars, from custom built dragsters to stock road cars. Lots of hot rods and old-school V8s, and new Mustangs and Camaros, even a stock looking Audi RS6.

It was great to be able to see them up close, and hear their roar!

I love everything about cars! Driving, looking at them, modifying. It's great to see what people do with cars, the different car cultures. If I was rich, my garage would be bigger than my house!
