Alfa Romeo has filled three of the five top spots including winning the 2016 Mille Miglia, the classic car recreation of the most famous road race in the world, with an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GranSport Zagato identical to the one that won the 1930 event, crossing the finish line first ahead of more than 450 vintage cars and 900 participants.
This year’s event covered more than 1800 km of roads over four days and through 230 towns in Italy with Andrea Vesco and Andrea Guerini crossing the finish line Brescia in their Alfa Romeo first. Giordano Mozzi and Stefania Biacca, placed third in an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Gran Sport from 1933 and in fifth place were Alessandro Gamberini and Gaetano Derosa in a 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GranSport Zagato.
“After finishing second in last year’s race,” winners Vesco and Guarini, “this year we succeeded in obtaining a victory. It is the law of large numbers and it had to happen sooner or later; we were skilled and lucky, including because our Alfa Romeo, which never gave us the slightest problem. It was a phenomenal race!”
Back in the original Mille Miglia in 1930 Tazio Nuvolari and Giovanni Battista Guidotti in anAlfa Romeo 6C 1750 GranSport Zagato achieved the previously unprecedented feat of averaging more than 100 kmh for the entire race and were celebrated for overtaking other rivals in the dark on unlit roads. It was one of 11 wins in the Mille Miglia achieved between 1927 and 1957, a record which remains unbeaten.
The 1000 mile long Mille Miglia ran 24 times from 1927 to 1957 and in the late 1950s was a round in the World Sports Car Championship. The historic recreation of the original classic was first run in 1977 and became an annual event in 1982. It has been won six times by an Alfa Romeo. The distance of the event is 1000 miles, based on the Roman Mile, which is 1000 paces, with a pace stated as five feet in 29 BC, or 1481 metres in modern terms.
