Press Release: Golf GTI Edition 40 – Arrives in Mid June

Golf GTI 40th edition will be sold out before it arrives.

27 May 2016: Volkswagen’s new Golf GTI Edition 40, the anniversary model marking 40 years of the Golf GTI, has nearly sold out before they have arrived on New Zealand shores. Only five of the 40 special edition vehicles allocated for NZ remain with the rest already sold through Volkswagen dealerships around the country. Special GTI anniversary models are only released every five years and the Edition 40 is the most powerful production GTI to date with 265 PS / 195 kW. It starts at $63,990 plus on road costs.

Arriving in New Zealand in mid-June, the new GTI includes an expressively sporty design and improved handling qualities. It has a turbocharged 2.0 litre TSI engine that generates a stomach-churning 265hp (195kW), which is 45 hp more than the previous GTI. Volkswagen has also added a boost function to the Edition 40, which is activated through kicking down on the accelerator. This gives the driver an extra 10 per cent of acceleration for 10 seconds, increasing engine power to over 290 PS. The 40th edition Golf GTI stays true to the unmistakable GTI design but has added side skirts, a rear diffuser and multi-piece rear spoiler. Plus it has black side mirrors and Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights. The new Golf GTI Edition 40 follows in the tradition of other anniversary models, as Volkswagen also honoured the Golf GTI with exclusive special editions for 30th and 35th birthday.

Volkswagen is offering the Golf GTI Edition 40 equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) for the sales launch. This engine-gearbox variant accelerates to 100 km/h in6.3 seconds using just 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The interplay of a new front splitter and the new rear spoiler produces optimum aerodynamic downforce. This results in excellent handling even at high cornering speeds.

The design of the GTI has been sharpened with a new front bumper with wide lateral air inlets, new rear diffuser and a multi-part roof spoiler. In addition, the GTI comes with 18-inch wheels in “Belvedere” design as standard or 19-inch “Brescia” alloy wheels as extras. Among the interior highlights are the motorsport bucket seats in GTI design as standard and alcantara multifunction steering wheel. First chance to see the Golf GTI Edition 40 will be at Fieldays. The only promotion of this model has been to existing Volkswagen performance customers.
