Clean Air Discount to shake up new and used EV market – for a short time

The New Zealand Government has announced significant rebates for the purchase of electric and electric-hybrid vehicles.

From July 1, purchasers of a new EV are entitled to an $8,635 rebate for new EVs, and a $3,450 rebate for used EVs. There is a cap of $80,000 for the rebate. It also includes new or used plug-in hybrids.

This means cars like New Zealand’s cheapest new EV, the MG ZS EV will drop in price to $40,365 (plus on-road costs. The plug-in Mitsubishi Outlander will receive a $5,750 discount, which is the rebate for new plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The used rebate for PHEVs is $2,300. All cars must have a 3-star or above safety (ANCAP) rating. The scheme will run from the 1st of July, to the 31st of December 2021.

The MG HS Plug-In Hybrid is priced from $52,990 plus on-road costs which, with the application of the rebate, will fall to start from $47,240 (plus on-road costs) from July 1 to eligible New Zealand buyers.
