As the arrival of the GWM Cannon Alpha gets closer, the company has confirmed its pricing for the all-new model.

Despite being the largest GWM vehicle to-date, the brand says its commitment to offering New Zealand customers the best possible value remains with the GWM Cannon Alpha range confirmed to start from $54,990 RRP.

Available with diesel and hybrid powertrain options, the Cannon Alpha becomes the sixth vehicle in GWM’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) strategy here in New Zealand. Significantly, the Cannon Alpha becomes the first ute in New Zealand to be available with a full hybrid powertrain.

2024 GWM Cannon Alpha – powertrains

The range-topping powertrain is a 2.0 litre turbo petrol hybrid engine, offering combined outputs of 255kW and 648Nm of torque delivering a combined fuel consumption of 9.8L/100km.

Alternatively, customers also have a choice of a new 2.4 litre turbo diesel engine delivering 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque. Fuel consumption on diesel variants is 8.9L/100km.

Both are mated to a GWM-developed 9 speed automatic transmission. Coupled with a go anywhere Torque On Demand (TOD) four-wheel drive system including a Borg Warner transfer case magnifying torque output by 2.64 in low range, GWM claims the Cannon Alpha offers strong performance across all driving scenarios.

Available in three variants with a choice of two familiar Lux and Ultra grades, (2.4L Turbo Diesel Lux & Ultra or 2.0L Petrol Hybrid Ultra) customers are offered a variety of choice to suit their specific needs.

The Cannon Alpha is GWM’s largest model to date. At 5445mm long (35mm longer than Cannon Ute), 1991mm wide (57mm wider than Cannon Ute), 1924mm tall (38mm taller than Cannon Ute), and with a 3350mm wheelbase (120mm long than Cannon Ute) the Cannon Alpha sits between your standard dual-cab ute and full size American pickup trucks. It offers similar interior space and rear seat comfort to larger utes without the compromise of being too big for some New Zealand roads and parking spaces.

A 3500kg braked towing capacity comes with both powertrains and built-in features such as a high mounted tray lamp, 60/40 split tail gate (Ultra grade only) allowing easy access to the tray, a tough spray on tray liner, and up to 821kg of payload, the Cannon Alpha is designed and ready for work.

The Cannon Alpha comes in three variants: Lux turbo diesel, Ultra turbo diesel, and Ultra hybrid. All equipped with a high level of capability and standard features centered around 3 Key Selling Points.

How on earth to start this? I've been car/bike/truck crazy since I was a teen. Like John, I had the obligatory Countach poster on the wall. I guess I'm more officially into classic and muscle cars than anything else - I currently have a '65 Sunbeam Tiger that left the factory the same day as I left the hospital as a newborn with my mother. How could I not buy that car? In 2016 my wife and I drove across the USA in a brand-new Dodge Challenger, and then shipped it home. We did this again in 2019 in a 1990 Chev Corvette - you can read about that trip on DriveLife, and again in 2023 buying a C5 Corvette and shipping it home. I'm a driving instructor and an Observer for the Institute of Advanced Motorists - trying to do my bit to make our roads safer.
