MINI New Zealand is set to further expand its model line-up with the new 5-door MINI Cooper C and S due for launch in Q4 2024.

MINI claims that it is presenting a versatile take on the classic MINI hatch, the new MINI Cooper 5-Door offers increased passenger and cargo room without sacrificing the brand’s famed go-kart handling.

“Whether it’s navigating the concrete jungle or a spirited weekend adventure, the new MINI Cooper 5-Door offers a blend of the beloved MINI character and everyday usability,” said Alexander Brockhoff, General Manager of MINI Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s the ideal option for drivers seeking the fun and engaging drive of the MINI Cooper 3-Door in a more flexible and spacious silhouette.”

The Cooper C 5-Door provides an entry point to the range with a 3-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. Capable of producing 115kW and 230Nm of torque, it completes the standard sprint in 8.0 seconds.

The Cooper S 5-Door is powered by a 4-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 150kW of power and 300Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds.

2024 MINI Cooper: New look – still MINI

The wheelbase of the MINI Cooper 5-Door is 72mm larger and its body 172mm longer compared with its 3-Door sibling to accommodate for five occupants. With the use of the 60-40 folding rear seats, the luggage capacity can be increased from 275 litres to 925 litres.

Embracing a new design philosophy of “Charismatic Simplicity”, MINI says the new Cooper 5-Door showcases contemporary minimalism on all surfaces to highlight the key features quintessential to the MINI Cooper.

The iconic round MINI headlights together with the octagonal front grille form the distinctive MINI face. As standard, the daytime running light comes in three options and can be easily adjusted to suit the driver’s mood. It also features an orchestrated welcome and goodbye animation.

Additionally, a palette of fresh new colours are available to enable further individualisation of the vehicle.

2024 MINI Cooper: Convenience at your fingertips

At the centre of the cabin sits the new central display: the MINI Interaction Unit. At 240mm in diameter, the circular OLED screen sets a new benchmark for digitalisation and perfectly complements the sleek and minimalistic interior, claims MINI.

With a simple greeting of ‘Hey MINI’ or by utilising the push-to-talk steering wheel button, the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant will activate in the form of animated graphic elements, typography and a MINI vehicle avatar. The avatar “Spike” is also available through the optional MINI Connected Package.

Through the course of regular dialogue with the driver, the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant continually learns and can take on day-to-day tasks on repeated routes. For example, utilising geo-based data, the vehicle can learn to automatically lower a window when entering a car park, bringing convenience and an added personal touch to regular routines. Furthermore, all MINI Cooper vehicles are fitted with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability to allow for seamless information integration.

One of the new key functionalities available through the central display is the MINI Experience Modes which MINI says perfectly aligns with MINI’s fun and playful personality. Each mode offers a bespoke set of sounds, visuals and colours that provide an immersive driving experience. A total of seven selectable modes are available: Core, Green, Go-Kart, Personal, Timeless, Vivid and Balance.

The MINI Cooper 5-Door range comes equipped with a high-resolution Head-Up Display as standard to keep the driver’s eyes on the road.

2024 MINI Cooper: “Big on impact”

Sustainability takes centre stage in the new MINI Cooper 5-Door with a core focus on circularity during production and materials use. From 2024, MINI says it is proud to be 100 per cent leather-free and chrome-free, offering a new range of sustainable options for interior trims and exterior highlights.

Furthermore, the light alloy wheels on the new MINI generation are manufactured using up to 70 per cent recycled aluminium. In combination with renewable electricity, this process reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent compared with conventional production methods.

The theme of recycling continues through the interior with the surfaces, vehicle floor and floor mats all made from at least 90 percent recycled polyester. The use of this high-quality and vibrant material in combination with the departure from leather sees production greenhouse emissions reduce by up to 98 per cent.

How on earth to start this? I've been car/bike/truck crazy since I was a teen. Like John, I had the obligatory Countach poster on the wall. I guess I'm more officially into classic and muscle cars than anything else - I currently have a '65 Sunbeam Tiger that left the factory the same day as I left the hospital as a newborn with my mother. How could I not buy that car? In 2016 my wife and I drove across the USA in a brand-new Dodge Challenger, and then shipped it home. We did this again in 2019 in a 1990 Chev Corvette - you can read about that trip on DriveLife, and again in 2023 buying a C5 Corvette and shipping it home. I'm a driving instructor and an Observer for the Institute of Advanced Motorists - trying to do my bit to make our roads safer.
