The BYD Shark 6 is priced from $69,990 MSRP + orc for the Launch Edition Premium AWD. First introduced to kiwis at the National Fieldays in June, customers will be able to test drive the plug-in super hybrid Ute at BYD dealers nationwide from December 2024.

Warren Willmot, BYD NZ Manager states “The arrival of the BYD Shark 6 Super Hybrid Ute to New Zealand represents a sea change in the way that New Zealand’s most popular vehicle, the Ute, is powered. The launch of Shark 6 represents not just a pioneering move for one-tonne Utes, but a continued commitment to reducing CO2 emissions in New Zealand. The Shark 6 emits only 46 grams per kilometre, so for traditional Ute drivers, they can have the grunt they’re used to without the guilt.”

The BYD Shark 6 is available in one high-end variant. The Premium AWD offers a interior loaded with technology including heads up display, a large 15.6” rotating touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over the air software updates and 12-speaker sound system.

2024 BYD Shark 6 Hybrid Ute – Xiaoyun 1.5t Hybrid Engine

The Shark 6 features the Super DM Technology 1.5 Turbo-Hybrid four-cylinder engine and electric motors. At the heart of the Super Hybrid DM Technology is an electric-based hybrid system. This hybrid architecture uses an electric motor and large-capacity battery as its primary power source, only using the engine for assistance. This system focuses on efficiency, adapting to different driving scenarios. BYD Super DM Technology uses a tailor-made version of the BYD Blade Battery, giving a power capacity of 29.58 kWh.

2024 BYD Shark 6 Hybrid Ute – Range

With up to 800km combined range and up to 100km on EV alone, range anxiety is a thing of the past, says BYD. The DC fast charge capability also means the vehicle can be recharged from 30 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes. You can also drive the Shark 6 in HEV mode, which recharges the battery while you’re driving, avoiding the need to stop at all.

2024 BYD Shark 6 Hybrid Ute – BYD Super DM-O Technology

The DM-O (Dual-Mode Off-Road) super hybrid technology is where the powertrain is mounted longitudinal, is the world’s first PHEV powertrain to be mounted this way. DM-O has additional off-road terrain modes controlled electronically, including sand, mud, snow and mountain, so the Shark 6 is highly capable in all terrains claims the company.

The approach angle is 31 degrees, departure angle is 19.5 degrees, and there is also 230mm of ground clearance so the Shark 6 can wade through up to 700mm of water for those more hardcore off-road adventures or missions and hill descent control comes as standard. There’s also an impressive payload of 790kgs and tow capacity of 2,500 kgs.

2024 BYD Shark 6 Hybrid Ute – Safety

As with all current BYD models, the company says safety and security is paramount and the BYD Shark 6 is no exception, featuring 7 air bags, a suite of driver assistance systems including driver fatigue monitoring, blind spot warning, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning and front and rear cross path detection and braking as well as intelligent cruise control, child detection alert, door open warning and more!

BYD Shark 6 features BYD’s Vehicle to Load technology meaning the vehicle can be transformed into a mobile power station for electrical appliances, such as power tools for the job, computers and gaming consoles, projectors for outdoor cinemas, as well as kettles and barbecues. There is also the option to draw power from the V2L plugs in the tray, while the vehicle is in motion.

2024 BYD Shark 6 Hybrid Ute – Style And Comfort

The BYD Shark 6 will be available in three exterior colours: Atlantis Grey, Arctic White and Cosmos Black, all paired with premium black eco-leather wrapped seats that feature heating, cooling and power adjustable functions as standard in the front. The interior is full of premium soft touch materials that soak up NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) and offer a high quality, comfortable and quiet interior space.

The 15.6- inch intelligent rotating touch screen features a range of controls and apps including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The BYD Shark 6 also features a premium Dynaudio sound system that offers 12 speakers, including two in the roof to give driver and passengers a surround sound audio experience. With plenty of storage options and robust grab handles for convenience in the front and rear, wireless charger with cooler, dual phone holders and a roomy rear cabin, BYD says the whole interior space has been thoughtfully designed.

How on earth to start this? I've been car/bike/truck crazy since I was a teen. Like John, I had the obligatory Countach poster on the wall. I guess I'm more officially into classic and muscle cars than anything else - I currently have a '65 Sunbeam Tiger that left the factory the same day as I left the hospital as a newborn with my mother. How could I not buy that car? In 2016 my wife and I drove across the USA in a brand-new Dodge Challenger, and then shipped it home. We did this again in 2019 in a 1990 Chev Corvette - you can read about that trip on DriveLife, and again in 2023 buying a C5 Corvette and shipping it home. I'm a driving instructor and an Observer for the Institute of Advanced Motorists - trying to do my bit to make our roads safer.
