  • Kiwis will be able to order the new Cannon from their local GWM dealership in February 2025
  • “Significant” improvements delivered in powertrain, design, technology and premium interior
  • Cannon introduces a new, larger 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, generating 135kW and 480Nm
  • 3,500kg tow rating
  • Launched in 4×4 Dual Cab Pick-Up, starting from $43,490 RRP + ORCs

New Zealand specifications and pricing of the new GWM Cannon have been confirmed, with the model now headlined with increased capabilities through the implementation of the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine and “class-leading” 3,500kg towing capacity.

Designed with Kiwi customer-led feedback in mind, GWM says it has stepped up the game in all key areas – refinement, engine capacity, towing and technology. The introduction of the larger displacement engine, currently deployed on the larger sibling, the Cannon Alpha, has unlocked significant improvements to vehicle performance, efficiency and capabilities, says the company.

Exclusively available in 4×4 Dual Cab Pickup form, the 2025 GWM Cannon is offered in the Lux grade with increased standard content, revised looks and with that GWM claims is a premium feel interior encompassing additional level of technology.

2025 GWM Cannon: Engine / Transmission / Drive

The new Cannon is powered by GWM’s 2.4-litre single turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, delivering 135kW of power at 3,600rpm and 480Nm of torque between 1,500-2,500rpm. It features a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), which optimises the aspect ratio at both low and high RPM, reducing turbo lag while maintaining efficiency at higher speeds.

Paired with GWM’s in-house 9-speed conventional torque converter automatic transmission, this compact unit — no larger than a standard 6-speed — handles up to 750Nm of output.

Equipped with a new generation of selectable intelligent all-terrain drive modes, the system enhances driving confidence by adapting vehicle dynamics to various conditions. Depending on the grade, up to seven modes are available, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, and Sand. Engaged via a centrally located dial, GWM says the BorgWarner transfer case optimises traction, stability, and performance. Additionally, the Cannon features an electronically activated rear differential (standard on 4×4 models).

2025 GWM Cannon: Interior / Technology

The redesigned centre console offers a clean and modern layout, reducing the number of buttons and dials for easier access. At its core, a large 12.3-inch touchscreen display enables wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The dark interior is complemented by subtle chrome accents, adding a refined touch, while the newly designed steering wheel proudly encompasses the Cannon logo.

GWM claims that functional and practical elements are thoughtfully integrated, including the aviation-inspired gear shifter — a signature of many GWM models — and a conveniently placed smartphone charging pad with USB-A and USB-C ports for versatile charging options. Drive modes and other essential controls are easily accessible via quick buttons surrounding the console.
