Kia’s electric revolution continues to gain momentum in New Zealand, and the new EV3 Light Long Range is a clear signal of where the brand is heading. Once known for budget-friendly hatchbacks and SUVs, Kia has transformed into a global EV leader, with its “Opposites United” design philosophy and fourth-generation battery tech setting new benchmarks.

Following the success of the larger EV9 and mid-sized EV5, the EV3 brings that same bold styling and innovation to a more compact, urban-friendly package.

Replacing the outgoing Niro EV, the EV3 marks a shift toward more purpose-built electric platforms, offering improved efficiency, space, and tech. The Light LR variant pairs an 81.4kWh battery with a 150kW motor, delivering up to 605km of range—exceptional for its size and price point. Kia has also tuned the EV3 for New Zealand’s unique road conditions, ensuring a composed ride even on coarse chip seal and winding terrain.

With accolades like World Car of the Year 2025, we test the car for a week to see if it’s worthy of that title.

How on earth to start this? I've been car/bike/truck crazy since I was a teen. Like John, I had the obligatory Countach poster on the wall. I guess I'm more officially into classic and muscle cars than anything else - I currently have a '65 Sunbeam Tiger that left the factory the same day as I left the hospital as a newborn with my mother. How could I not buy that car? In 2016 my wife and I drove across the USA in a brand-new Dodge Challenger, and then shipped it home. We did this again in 2019 in a 1990 Chev Corvette - you can read about that trip on DriveLife, and again in 2023 buying a C5 Corvette and shipping it home. I'm a driving instructor and an Observer for the Institute of Advanced Motorists - trying to do my bit to make our roads safer.

With up a reasonable real-world range and fast-charging capability, it’s designed for efficient, everyday driving.

The cabin is minimalist yet functional, and the ride is smooth and comfortable. It’s a strong contender in the EV market, but it's price might hurt sales..
