The MG badge has long been synonymous with affordable, open-top British motoring, a legacy cemented by iconic models like the classic MGB roadster. While the brand has recently re-emerged in New Zealand with a focus on value-driven, family-friendly EVs like the MG ZS and the popular MG4, its new “Hybrid First” strategy signals a broader approach.

Now, MG is reconnecting with its sporting heritage in the most dramatic way possible: with the 2025 Cyberster AWD. This isn’t just a nostalgic tribute; it’s a completely reimagined grand tourer that leverages an electric powertrain, a three-screen digital cockpit, and an exterior that makes a bold statement with its signature scissor doors and aggressive design. The Cyberster represents a monumental shift for the brand, fusing its past identity with a futuristic vision to deliver a true flagship model.

Liam takes the Cyberster for a week to see if it’s worthy of being called a sports car.

2025 MG Cyberster: Range

The 2025 MG Cyberster is available in two distinct variants in New Zealand, offering a choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The entry-level model, the Cyberster RWD, is priced from $109,900 and is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 250 kW and 475 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.2 seconds. This model has a WLTP range of 507 km and comes with 19-inch alloy wheels.

The higher-spec variant, the Cyberster AWD, starts from $129,000 and features a dual-motor setup, delivering a combined output of 375 kW and 725 Nm, which drastically reduces its 0-100 km/h time to a blistering 3.2 seconds. The key differences between the two models are the powertrain configuration and performance, with the AWD model offering significantly more power and a quicker acceleration time. While both models share a 77 kWh battery and a host of premium features like electric scissor doors, a three-screen cockpit, and a Bose audio system, the AWD variant also upgrades to 20-inch alloy wheels.

2025 MG Cyberster: Competition

The 2025 MG Cyberster AWD carves out a unique position in the New Zealand market, disrupting the traditional sports car segment with its value proposition and electric performance. While its 0-100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds rivals that of high-end petrol-powered rivals like the Porsche 718 Cayman S and the BMW Z4 M40i, it significantly undercuts their price points.

At a starting price of $129,000, it offers supercar-level acceleration and a host of modern technology, including scissor doors, a three-screen cockpit, and advanced driver assistance systems, which are often expensive optional extras on its European competitors. This makes the Cyberster a compelling and disruptive force, targeting buyers who desire head-turning design and blistering performance without the high six-figure price tag associated with established luxury sports brands.
