We take the new X3 out for a week’s driving, and see if it matches BMW’s claim of being a driver’s car.

Watch as Liam takes the X3 through its paces, and comes up with a summary of his thoughts on the latest X3.

What’s in the 2025 BMW X3 Range?

The 2025 BMW X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid is offered in New Zealand with a single powertrain but available in multiple trim configurations that vary by price and specification. Powered by a 2.0‑litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an 8-speed automatic transmission, the combined output is 220 kW and 450 Nm. This setup delivers brisk performance—0–100 km/h in around 6.2 s—with a WLTP-rated electric range of approximately 85–90 km, combined fuel consumption of 0.9–1.1 L/100 km, and CO₂ emissions of just 21–26 g/km.

Pricing in New Zealand begins at about $118,900 for the standard model, as listed for the 2025 launch. Dealerships are also offering variants fully equipped with the M Sport and M Sport Pro Packages, adaptive suspension, Harman Kardon audio, panoramic glass roof, enhanced seating materials, larger alloy wheels, and advanced driver‑assistance features, priced between $129,900 and $129,990 drive‑away. Demo models with similar spec have also appeared priced around $114,900.

In essence, all 30e variants share identical powertrain and core EV performance. The primary differentiators are the trim packages: the standard version includes BMW’s essential hybrid tech and curved display, while the M Sport and Pro options elevate styling and comfort—adding 20–21″ wheels, sport seats, adaptive suspension, premium audio, plus lighting and aerodynamic upgrades—justifying the price premium.

How does the 2025 BMW X3 30e compare to its competition?

In New Zealand’s luxury plug-in hybrid compact SUV segment, the 2025 BMW X3 30e holds a competitive position between its German rivals. It delivers stronger electric-only range and sporty performance than the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e—offering sharper handling and higher cargo capacity—while boasting a more premium maintenance package and longer corrosion warranty.

Against the Volvo XC60 Recharge (T8), the X3 30e presents a sportier, more engaging drive, although Volvo’s PHEV generates significantly higher total output; still, BMW’s efficient xDrive30e retains appeal for buyers prioritising dynamic handling and established brand reliability.

Compared to the Audi Q5 TFSIe, the X3 30e offers greater electric range and slightly more cargo space, trading off some of Audi’s smoother ride comfort in favour of agile steering and a roomier load bay. Priced between the Volvo’s and Mercedes’ PHEVs in NZ, the X3 30e positions itself as a sporting yet practical choice, appealing to drivers who want engaging handling, strong hybrid credentials, and ample space without moving into top-tier pricing.
