What’s in the 2025 Volkswagen Tayron Model Range?

In New Zealand, the 2025 Volkswagen Tayron is offered in two petrol‑powered, seven‑seat AWD variants: Elegance and R‑Line, each featuring a 2.0‑litre turbocharged engine, 7‑speed DSG and VW’s 4Motion AWD system.

The Elegance variant, priced from $78,990, delivers 150 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque, achieving around 8.0 L/100 km fuel consumption—its standard kit includes adaptive damping suspension, illuminated VW emblems, and comprehensive LED lighting.

Stepping up to the R‑Line (tested), at $96,990, gains a significantly more potent 195 kW and 400 Nm powertrain with slightly higher consumption at 8.8 L/100 km, plus performance‑oriented enhancements such as progressive steering, 20‑inch alloy wheels, IQ.Light matrix headlights, dynamic indicators, illuminated badges, a larger 15‑inch infotainment system, a head‑up display, and ergoActive part‑leather front seats featuring heating, ventilation, and massage. Both share key features—including seven‑seat versatility, 4Motion AWD, adaptive chassis, and a 2,500 kg towing capacity—but the R‑Line amplifies driver engagement, style, and cabin tech.

A Touring Package is available for either variant, adding panoramic glass roof, Harman Kardon audio, and ergoActive seats to the Elegance or upgrading the R‑Line further.

What’s the competition for the 2025 Volkswagen Tayron R-Line?

The 2025 Volkswagen Tayron positions itself squarely against popular seven-seat SUVs like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, and Toyota Highlander. It offers a more premium cabin and advanced tech at a price point that undercuts luxury rivals, while delivering strong turbo petrol performance and AWD capability.

In New Zealand’s booming SUV market, the Tayron stands as an attractive upgrade for families seeking space and refinement without stepping into full luxury territory.

How on earth to start this? I've been car/bike/truck crazy since I was a teen. Like John, I had the obligatory Countach poster on the wall. I guess I'm more officially into classic and muscle cars than anything else; in 2016 I drove across the USA in a brand-new Dodge Challenger, and then shipped it home. We did this again in 2019 in a 1990 Chev Corvette - you can read about that trip on DriveLife, and again in 2023 buying a C5 Corvette and shipping it home. Current cars in my stable include a Celica GT4, a Rover SD1 V8, and an Aston Martin Vantage. I'm a driving instructor and an Observer for the Institute of Advanced Motorists - trying to do my bit to make our roads safer.
2025-volkswagen-tayron-r-line-car-reviewThe Tayron really ticks a lot of boxes, and is so utterly refined and quiet.

It also has that benefit of having well-tuned driver assist systems that will not annoy you. That might just be the thing in 2026 to sway buyers.
