BAIC New Zealand has added another hybrid SUV to its local line-up, with the new X55 Hybrid, now arriving at dealers nationwide.
The new model joins the recently introduced B30 Hybrid 2WD and AWD, giving BAIC a broader hybrid SUV range in New Zealand. It is being offered in two variants: X55 Elite Hybrid and X55 Premium Hybrid.
Launch pricing starts at $40,990 plus on-road costs for the X55 Elite Hybrid, while the X55 Premium Hybrid starts at $42,990 plus on-road costs. BAIC says both prices are introductory offers, each representing a $2,000 saving over the recommended retail price.
The X55 Hybrid uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 160kW electric motor that produces 310Nm of torque. BAIC claims combined fuel use of 5.8L/100km, which puts it in the ballpark for buyers looking at hybrid medium SUVs but not wanting to move to a plug-in hybrid or full EV.
BAIC refers to the system as RE-HEV. In simple terms, the battery can power the electric motor at low and medium speeds, while regenerative braking helps recharge the battery when coasting. At higher speeds, the petrol engine can drive a generator to power the motor and recharge the battery. Drive is sent through a single-speed drive system.
The X55 Hybrid sits alongside the petrol X55 rather than replacing it. The existing petrol model uses a 1.5-litre turbo engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the hybrid brings a different drivetrain aimed at lower fuel use and smoother low-speed running.
BAIC says the hybrid setup provides a quieter and more refined driving experience, particularly around town. Naturally, we will reserve judgement on that until we have driven one on New Zealand roads.

Specification and equipment
Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch central screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. The X55 Hybrid also continues with MacPherson front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension.
Safety and driver-assistance equipment mentioned by BAIC includes Emergency Brake Assist, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, and Electronic Stability Program functions. Other reports on the New Zealand model also list items such as radar cruise control, wireless Apple CarPlay, 19-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front seats on higher grades, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof depending on variant.
BAIC New Zealand comments
“The arrival of the X55 Hybrid represents another important step in BAIC’s growth strategy and is a significant addition to our New Zealand line-up. It further demonstrates BAIC’s commitment to offering customers greater choice across our SUV range,” said Shiguang Guo, General Manager BAIC New Zealand.
“More Kiwi drivers are looking for vehicles that deliver lower fuel consumption without compromising on performance, comfort or equipment. The X55 Hybrid achieves exactly that, while continuing BAIC’s reputation for exceptional value and premium specification.”
Guo added that the X55 RE-HEV is “more than just a hybrid version of the current petrol X55”, describing it as a step forward in refinement, efficiency and technology.
Pricing
| Model | Introductory price | RRP |
| BAIC X55 Elite Hybrid | $40,990 + ORC | $42,990 + ORC |
| BAIC X55 Premium Hybrid | $42,990 + ORC | $44,990 + ORC |
Like other BAIC models sold in New Zealand, the X55 Hybrid is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Dealer listings also refer to an eight-year/150,000km battery warranty, although buyers should confirm warranty terms with their dealer.
The BAIC dealer network has also expanded recently, with Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North, Rotorua and West Auckland added at the start of September. BAIC says the X55 Hybrid is available to test drive now.
DriveLife’s take
The X55 Hybrid lands in a busy part of the market, where hybrid SUVs are no longer unusual and price/value is becoming a major battleground. On paper, BAIC is leaning heavily into that value equation with sharp introductory pricing, a long warranty, and a decent equipment list.
The big question will be how the RE-HEV drivetrain feels in real-world use, especially compared with the petrol X55 and the established hybrid competition. We will be keen to see whether the claimed economy, refinement, and value stack up once we get behind the wheel.
