MG Motor New Zealand has revealed the official pricing and specification of its new high-performance all-wheel drive electric hatchback, the MG4 XPOWER, confirming the new sub-four second 0-100kmh sprinter will be available from $69,990.*

The new range-topping MG4 XPOWER firmly underlines the company’s Take Charge philosophy, as an EV performance car delivering Kiwi drivers breathtaking power and dynamics at an extremely competitive price.

It features a dual motor powertrain delivering 320kw of power and up to 600Nm of torque, making the car capable of 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The subtle exterior design and specification enhancements include orange ‘XPOWER’ brake calipers, a two-tone black roof, new 18’’ alloy wheels and polished trim accents, alongside an exclusive new Hunter Green colour option (Hunter Green is an additional $1,000 cost).

MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao said the new MG4 XPower is proof that EV performance can be affordable.

“The MG4 XPOWER has supercar acceleration and is packed with features, including launch control, showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and spirited to drive.”

MG New Zealand Country Manager, Arek Zywot, shared a similar sentiment.

“There are very few performance vehicles on the market today, let alone with zero-emissions, which deliver the sheer acceleration the MG4 XPOWER is capable of.

“This type of ‘push you back in the seat’ experience has previously only been available in cars costing significantly more than this new model.  This new EV makes a real statement in terms of performance as well as price, as it is available from less than $70,000* and is also eligible for the full Clean Car rebate.

“It promises to be one of the most exciting new electric cars of 2023.”

2023 MG XPOWER: The most powerful MG to arrive in New Zealand

Underpinned by the MG4’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), the XPOWER is equipped with an all-new dual motor configuration that delivers up to 320kW of peak performance to all four wheels, via front (150kW) and rear (170kW) electric motors.
As well as offering what MG says is supercar-rivalling performance in a straight line, the enhanced features include new technological upgrades to effectively distribute power and maximise driver engagement while cornering.

An all-new Dynamic Cornering Control System will be available for the first time on an MG, featuring a locking electronic differential and Intelligent Motor Control to allow torque vectoring between all four wheels, generating maximum traction and outstanding composure in a wide range of driving conditions, says MG.

A comprehensive series of suspension upgrades have been completed, featuring recalibrated spring and damper tuning, stiffer anti-roll bars and sharper steering. Overall suspension stiffness has been increased by up to 25%, meaning the MG4 XPOWER will build upon the acclaimed handling characteristics of the current MG4 models.

The 64kWh battery is also capable of recharging at up to 140kW, meaning a charge time of only 26 minutes from 10% – 80% using a 150kW DC rapid charger. The MG4 XPOWER EV is expected to bring zero-emissions performance motoring within reach for far more New Zealand customers, representing an affordable, credible alternative to conventional petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles.

Increased stopping power reduces the MG4 XPOWER’s 100-0km/h stopping distance to 33.9 metres, generated via uprated, ventilated 345mm discs on all four corners, with new premium Bridgestone Turanza tyres offering excellent levels of grip without compromising rolling efficiency.

Underlining the new model’s performance credentials, a new launch control feature allows drivers to experience MG4 XPOWER in its ultimate form by sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

The 2023 MG XPOWER is available in the following colours:

  • Hunter Green
  • Black Pearl
  • Brixton Blue
  • Camden Grey
  • Volcano Orange
  • Diamond Red
  • Sterling Silver
  • Dover White

As with all new MG vehicles available for sale in New Zealand, the XPOWER comes standard with seven years warranty, seven years roadside assistance and seven years warrant of fitness checks.

MG NZ says potential buyers are invited to register their interest at the MG4 XPOWER page on the MG New Zealand website. There is no delivery date mentioned yet, but we’d expect it to be in 2023.

How on earth to start this? I've been car/bike/truck crazy since I was a teen. Like John, I had the obligatory Countach poster on the wall. I guess I'm more officially into classic and muscle cars than anything else - I currently have a '65 Sunbeam Tiger that left the factory the same day as I left the hospital as a newborn with my mother. How could I not buy that car? In 2016 my wife and I drove across the USA in a brand-new Dodge Challenger, and then shipped it home. You can read more on www.usa2nz.co.nz. We did this again in 2019 in a 1990 Chev Corvette - you can read about that trip on DriveLife.
